Stainless steel appliances are absolutely gorgeous – when they are clean! While stainless steel gives many kitchens a high-end, professional look and is a very durable finish for household appliances, it can really be a challenge to clean, and keep clean. Many common cleaning products, even just a damp cloth, leave visible streaks on the surface and fingerprints and smudges show very easily on many stainless steel finishes.
Of course, House Spouse cleans a lot of stainless steel and has learned a bit along the way that you may find helpful in your own home. Our approach is to use a professional stainless steel cleaner and polish, however, we have found some home remedies also work well.
No matter the product that you are using, it is important to always wipe the stainless steel in the direction of the grain. This avoids any visible scratches that may be caused by the cleaning media and also helps to blend in streaks and uneven polishing.
Here are some cleaning solutions that you may find helpful:
-
White vinegar – simply put some white vinegar onto a paper towel and wipe the surface of the stainless steel. The vinegar is acidic and will help to get rid of water spots that are causing streaks as well as cut through the oil left from fingerprints.
-
Glass cleaner – use an evaporative one with ammonia. The evaporative qualities will help to make for a streak free shine.
-
Rubbing alcohol – this works very similarly to glass cleaner. Put some onto a paper towel and wipe the surface, as with the vinegar.
-
Stainless steel polish – this is House Spouses preferred approach for a truly professional result, although it is also the most expensive. You can likely achieve good results with cheaper products that you already have in your home. However, if you are really struggling, a professional product is always a good option. Just be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions.
